There are some things that an organisation does that make it unique in the area that it operates - these are its core competences. In order to use these competences properly to provide the required outcomes from the organisation there needs to be relevant capacity. This is in terms of both the people needed and the physical assets to enable those people to carry out the tasks.

Managing these capabilities (the combination of competences and capacity) is a key task of leaders in the organisation.
