Practices for applying Organisational Ecology
![]() |
These are some of the practices that build an organisation using the principles of OE. They are not in any particular order and each group/team/organisation will have to explore which of these they use to start the change in their group. Some of these have been expanded - others will follow. |
Build a more open, devolved management structure. This is about departments, functions, teams being seen, and seeing themselves, first and foremost as a means of ensuring success for the organisation, not as permanent entities. |
Manage the core capabilities. The organisation has core competences which, when coupled with sufficient capacity, provide the means for the organisation to deliver. |
Embrace the use of teams. Teams enable innovation and delivery by bringing people with differing skills, attitudes and behaviours together. |
Create a climate for learning - put the learning organisation into practice. |
Establish portfolio management - as a key tool for managing the diversity of things that the organisation does. |
Create simple clear vision - for the organisation or team |
Grow the strategy. Continually develop and adapt the strategy - include trial and learning as well as analysis and reasoning. | ||
Devolve ownership of the task - to those directly dealing with it. Be clear about the resources available and how the task fits the centres of focus. |
Support failure as a means of learning. Trying out new ideas means that some will work and some won't. People need to feel comfortable about an experiment that failed. |
